Quiz and classroom uses

  • Capital city drills — draw a country, name the capital before the answer appears.
  • Map work — draw five and place them all on a blank map.
  • Language pairing — draw a country, name its main language.
  • Flag rounds — draw a list and set them as a picture round.

Picking a destination

A random draw is a genuinely good way to plan a trip, because it removes the shortlist you have been circling for months. Draw three, look up flight prices for all three, and go to the cheapest. The decision costs nothing and you end up somewhere you would not have chosen.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries count as European?

Every sovereign state generally counted as part of Europe, which includes the transcontinental ones such as Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Cyprus. Dependencies and territories that are not sovereign states are left out.

Are the capitals up to date?

Yes, and each one is the official capital rather than the largest city. The two differ more often than people expect — Switzerland, the Netherlands and Turkey all catch quiz-setters out.

Is the result really random?

It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.

Can the same result appear twice?

Not unless you turn on "Allow repeats". By default every item in a list is different, which is what you want for a game, a team draw or a set of prompts.
