Random Noun Generator
Everyday concrete nouns — things you can picture. Useful for prompts, drawing games and any exercise where an abstract word would be no help at all.
How to use this tool
- 1Choose how many nouns you want.
- 2Use the filter if you only want part of the list.
- 3Press Generate.
- 4Copy the whole list, or download it as a text file.
Press Generate to draw your first noun.
Why nouns are the useful ones
Of all the word types, nouns carry the most weight in a prompt, because a noun is a thing and a thing can be described, moved, broken or wanted. Give a writer "a verb" and they ask what is doing it. Give them "a lighthouse" and they have already started.
Good uses
- Story starters — three nouns that must all appear.
- Drawing games — concrete nouns are the only kind that work.
- Metaphor practice — draw two and write the sentence that connects them.
- Vocabulary drills — name it in a second language before the timer runs out.
Frequently asked questions
Are these concrete or abstract nouns?
Concrete, on purpose. "Anchor" and "kettle" give you something to picture. "Justice" and "freedom" do not, and in a prompt or a drawing game an abstract noun stops the exercise dead.
Why are they all singular?
Singular is the dictionary form, and you can add the s yourself if you need it. Going the other way is harder, because English plurals are irregular often enough to be annoying.
Is the result really random?
It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.
Can the same result appear twice?
Not unless you turn on "Allow repeats". By default every item in a list is different, which is what you want for a game, a team draw or a set of prompts.
