How to use this tool

  1. 1Choose how many adjectives you want.
  2. 2Use the filter if you only want part of the list.
  3. 3Press Generate.
  4. 4Copy the whole list, or download it as a text file.

Press Generate to draw your first adjective.

The first adjective is rarely the best one

When you describe something, the word that arrives first is the one you have used most often — big, nice, interesting. It arrives first because it is worn smooth, and it is worn smooth because it means almost nothing. Drawing a random one breaks the reflex and makes you choose on purpose.

Where these get used

  • Character sheets — three adjectives before you write a single scene.
  • Naming — adjective plus noun is the oldest formula there is.
  • Describing practice — draw one and describe the room you are in using it.
  • Vocabulary building — look up any you would not have used yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use adjectives for naming?

Draw an adjective and a noun, then put them together. That is where most usernames, band names and product names come from — an unexpected pairing of a describing word and a thing.

Should I use more adjectives in my writing?

Usually fewer. Most editing advice says to cut adjectives and let stronger nouns and verbs carry the sentence. Where this list helps is replacing a tired adjective with a precise one, not adding another.

Is the result really random?

It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.

Can the same result appear twice?

Not unless you turn on "Allow repeats". By default every item in a list is different, which is what you want for a game, a team draw or a set of prompts.
