Using a random word to get unstuck

The technique is older than the internet: when you cannot see past your own idea, introduce something that has nothing to do with it. Draw a word, then force a connection between that word and your problem. Most of the connections are nonsense, and one of them is not. The nonsense is the price of the one.

Word games that need this

  • Charades and Pictionary — draw a word nobody chose.
  • Story chains — each player gets a word they have to work in.
  • Vocabulary practice — draw five and use all of them in one paragraph.
  • Passphrases — four random words make a passphrase that is easy to remember and hard to guess. Draw them somewhere private, not on a shared screen.

Frequently asked questions

What are random words actually useful for?

Three things mostly. Breaking a creative block by forcing an unrelated idea into the problem. Warming up before writing, by giving yourself a word you have to use. And testing — forms, search boxes and layouts all behave differently with real words than with "test test test".

Where do these words come from?

A hand-checked list of common English words, sorted by type. Everything in it is a word most people already know, because an obscure word is no use as a prompt — you spend the time looking it up instead of using it.

Is the result really random?

It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.

Can the same result appear twice?

Not unless you turn on "Allow repeats". By default every item in a list is different, which is what you want for a game, a team draw or a set of prompts.
