Games that start with a letter

Scattergories, the Categories game and most quiz-night word rounds all work the same way: one letter is drawn, and every answer has to begin with it. Drawing the letter properly matters more than it sounds — people asked to "pick a letter" reach for the same handful every time, and S and M come up far more often than chance would give them.

The filters

  • All 26 — the normal draw, including the awkward ones.
  • Vowels only — five letters, useful for spelling and phonics work.
  • Consonants only — twenty-one letters, and a harder game.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the same letter twice?

Only if you turn on "Allow repeats". With it off, each letter is drawn once, so you can never ask for more than 26 — or more than five when you have filtered to vowels.

What are random letters used for?

Category games like Scattergories, where a letter starts every answer. Teaching the alphabet. Drawing initials for a name or a team. And picking a starting letter when a word game lets you choose one.

Is the result really random?

It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.
