Verbs in language learning

Verb conjugation is drilled because it has to be automatic, and it only becomes automatic when you cannot predict what is coming. Working down a textbook list, you learn the list. Drawing a verb at random and conjugating it on the spot is much closer to what actually happens in a conversation.

Exercises worth trying

  • Tense drills — draw one verb, write it in six tenses.
  • Charades — verbs are far better to act out than nouns.
  • Sentence building — draw a verb and a noun, connect them.
  • Editing practice — find a weak verb in your own draft and replace it with a stronger one.

Frequently asked questions

What form are the verbs in?

The base form — the one you would find in a dictionary, without "to" in front. From there you can make any tense you need, which is the whole point for conjugation practice.

Are irregular verbs included?

Yes, and that is deliberate. Irregular verbs are exactly the ones learners need to practise, so leaving them out would make the list easier and less useful.

Is the result really random?

It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.

Can the same result appear twice?

Not unless you turn on "Allow repeats". By default every item in a list is different, which is what you want for a game, a team draw or a set of prompts.
