Reading a verse on its own

A single verse is a prompt, not a proof. Most verses were written as part of a longer argument or story, and reading one alone can turn a promise made to one person into a general rule, or a warning into a comfort. If a verse strikes you, the useful next step is to open the chapter around it.

Ways people use this

  • A verse for the day — one draw each morning, written out by hand.
  • Journaling prompts — the verse at the top of the page, your response underneath.
  • Study groups — draw several and discuss what they have in common.
  • Memorisation — draw one a week and learn it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Which translation is this?

The King James Version, first published in 1611. It is used here because it is in the public domain, so the text can be quoted freely. Modern translations are under copyright and cannot be reproduced this way.

Is the whole Bible in the list?

No. It is a curated selection of well-known verses from across the Old and New Testaments, chosen so that a random draw gives you something you can sit with. A draw from all 31,000 verses would mostly return genealogies.

Is the result really random?

It is drawn by a seeded random number generator, which means the draw is unpredictable but repeatable. Press Generate again for a fresh seed and a completely different set.

Can the same result appear twice?

Not unless you turn on "Allow repeats". By default every item in a list is different, which is what you want for a game, a team draw or a set of prompts.
