Weird Text Generator

The stranger half of Unicode: letters borrowed from other writing systems, flipped alphabets and characters stacked with marks until they overflow the line.

Where the weird letters come from

None of these were designed as decorative alphabets. Each one is a set of characters from a real writing system — Chinese, Ethiopic, Cherokee, phonetic notation — picked because they happen to resemble Latin letters. Unicode contains enough of the world's scripts that a rough look-alike exists for nearly every letter.

Worth knowing

Because these are real characters from real languages, they carry meaning to people who read those scripts. Using them decoratively on a public profile is common, but it is not neutral, and it is worth choosing deliberately rather than by accident.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

Are these letters from real languages?

Many of them are. The Asian-like style uses Chinese characters chosen because they resemble Latin letters, and the tribal-like style uses Ethiopic syllables the same way. They carry real meanings in their own scripts — a point worth knowing before using them on a public profile.

Why does some of it spill onto the line above?

The cursed style stacks several combining marks on each letter. Your device draws them all, so tall stacks overflow into the surrounding lines. Different apps clip it differently, which is why the same text can look wildly different in two places.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
