Three different kinds of small
- Superscript — raised letters, made for footnote markers. The most "tiny" looking, and the least complete.
- Small caps — capitals drawn at lowercase height. The most readable option and the one to use for a whole line.
- Subscript — lowered letters from chemistry notation. Very few letters exist, so most words come out half-converted.
Where tiny text works
It works best as a label above or beside something else — a pronoun line in a bio, a small tag under a username, a quiet aside. Used for a full sentence it is genuinely hard to read, especially on a phone.
Please use these sparingly
Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.
One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
Why are some letters missing from the tiny styles?
Unicode never completed these alphabets. Superscript has no proper q, and subscript is missing most consonants, because they were added for footnotes and chemistry rather than for writing words. The tool leaves any letter it cannot shrink exactly as you typed it.
Which tiny style is the most readable?
Small caps. It keeps normal letter shapes at a reduced height, so it stays readable at any size. Superscript sits high on the line and gets hard to read past a few words.
Is this a font I have to install?
No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.
Why do some styles show as empty boxes?
A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.
Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?
It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
