Italic Text Generator
Apps that offer no italic button will still accept these, because the slant is part of the character rather than formatting laid over it. Serif, sans-serif and bold italic, side by side.

Italics without an italic button
Word processors italicise by tilting the font. Instagram captions, LinkedIn posts and username fields have no font to tilt, so nothing happens. Unicode italics avoid the problem entirely: each slanted letter is its own character, and it stays slanted wherever it goes.
Where italics still read as emphasis
Italics work best on one phrase — a book title, a quiet aside, a quote. A whole paragraph of Unicode italics is noticeably slower to read, because the shapes are less familiar than the ones your eye is trained on.
Please use these sparingly
Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.
One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the serif and sans-serif italics?
Serif italics have small finishing strokes on the letters and read as classic or literary. Sans-serif italics are clean and read as modern. On a phone the sans-serif version is usually easier to read at small sizes.
Why does the lowercase h look different?
Unicode has a gap where the italic h should be, so the character used is the one borrowed from mathematics — it is the correct italic h, just defined in a different block. It renders the same on every current device.
Is this a font I have to install?
No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.
Why do some styles show as empty boxes?
A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.
Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?
It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
