Subscript Text Generator

H₂O, CO₂, x₁ — lowered characters that work in plain text boxes with no formatting menu. Numbers convert completely; letters only where Unicode defines them.

Formulas in places with no formatting

Chemical formulas, mathematical indices and footnote markers all need lowered characters, and the boxes people type them into — a spreadsheet cell, a form field, a chat message, a filename — usually have no subscript button. Unicode subscripts solve that, because the character is already the right shape.

Digits are complete, letters are not

₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉ all exist, so anything numeric converts cleanly. The letters were added piecemeal for phonetics and are still missing b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y and z. If you need one of those, superscript is worth checking — its coverage is different.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

Do all letters have a subscript version?

No, and this is the main limitation. All ten digits exist, plus a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x. Everything else was never added, so it stays full size. Chemistry and maths formulas are usually fine because they mostly need numbers.

Is this the same as the subscript button in Word?

The result looks similar but works differently. Word shrinks and lowers a normal character using formatting. This gives you separate characters that are already lowered, so they survive being pasted into a plain text field where formatting would be lost.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
