Where blackletter comes from

Blackletter was ordinary handwriting in Europe for roughly four hundred years. Scribes narrowed and darkened their letters to fit more words on expensive parchment, and the tight, vertical texture is why the style is called "black". It stayed in everyday use in Germany until the 1940s, and survives today on newspaper mastheads, certificates and beer labels.

Two weights, two moods

The lighter blackletter reads as old and formal — a certificate, a masthead, a book title. The bold version reads as heavy and modern, which is why metal bands and tattoo artists reach for it. Try your text in both; they give very different impressions of the same words.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

Is gothic the same as Old English?

People use both names for the same thing. The proper name is blackletter — the dense, angular handwriting used across Europe from about 1150, and the script Gutenberg cut his first type to imitate. "Gothic" in typography sometimes also means a plain sans-serif font, which is the opposite of this.

Why are some capitals shaped differently?

Unicode has gaps in the blackletter block, so C, H, I, R and Z come from a separate set of letterforms. They belong to the same tradition and were designed together, so they sit correctly alongside the rest.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
