Vaporwave Text Generator

Wide, evenly spaced letters — the look every vaporwave cover and aesthetic edit uses. These are full-width characters from Japanese typesetting, not letters with spaces between them.

Where the look came from

Vaporwave album art in the early 2010s borrowed heavily from 1990s Japanese consumer design — software boxes, mall signage, Windows 95 screenshots. Full-width Latin text appeared on all of it, because that is simply how Japanese systems set English words. What was a technical detail there became the defining visual signal of the genre.

Practical notes

  • Every character counts as one, but it takes twice the space. A bio will look full long before you reach the limit.
  • Long lines wrap awkwardly on phones. Keep it to a few words.
  • It stays legible — unlike most styled text, full-width letters keep their exact normal shapes.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just put spaces between the letters?

Because apps collapse repeated spaces and break lines in the wrong places. Full-width characters carry their own width, so the spacing is exact and cannot be stripped or rewrapped.

What makes a character "full width"?

Japanese and Chinese typesetting places every character in a square cell. Latin letters were given matching square versions so they could be mixed into that grid. A full-width A occupies the same space as a kanji, which is where the stretched look comes from.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
