Upside Down Text Generator

ʇxǝʇ ɹnoʎ sdılɟ sıɥ⊥ — the letters are swapped for look-alike characters that sit the other way up, and the whole line is reversed so it reads correctly when you turn your screen.

Why some letters look off

There is no complete upside-down alphabet in Unicode, so every flipped letter is an approximation borrowed from somewhere else. Most are close. A few — capital Q, capital T, the digit 4 — are the best available match rather than a real match, which is why they sit slightly wrong.

Where it works

Flipped text is a joke format: a comment reply, a caption, a username that makes someone tilt their head. It is not for anything anybody needs to read quickly, and it is unreadable to a screen reader.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

How does flipping work?

Two steps. Each letter is swapped for a character that happens to look like it turned over — an upside-down a is ɐ, a Latin turned a. Then the whole line is reversed, because the first letter has to end up on the right.

Are the flipped letters real characters?

Yes, but they come from all over Unicode. Some are genuine turned letters from phonetics, some are Greek or Cyrillic that happen to fit, and a few are mathematical symbols. That mixture is why the result is not perfectly even.

Can I flip it back?

Not with this tool, and usually not reliably at all. Several normal letters flip to the same character, so turning it back cannot always tell which one you started with.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
