Hacked Text Generator

Two sides of the same look: corrupted characters that read as a system falling over, and clean monospace that reads as a terminal. Both copy and paste as plain text.

Two different clichés

Film shorthand for "hacked" comes in two flavours. One is corruption — characters breaking apart, text bleeding past its box, a system visibly failing. The other is control — clean green monospace on black, everything aligned, someone who knows exactly what they are doing. This page has both, and they say opposite things.

Where it gets used

Video titles and thumbnails, stream overlays, cybersecurity posts, ARG puzzles and gaming handles. Monospace is the one that still works at small sizes; the corrupted styles need room to be legible at all.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

Does this actually hack anything?

No. It changes what your text looks like and nothing else. It is a visual effect for posts, videos and usernames — there is no functional side to it at all.

Which style looks most like a terminal?

Monospace. Every character is the same width, which is exactly how a console renders text, so columns line up and the whole thing reads as a machine wrote it.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
