Four hundred years of German printing
Fraktur was commissioned around 1513 for Emperor Maximilian I and became the standard typeface for German-language printing until the middle of the twentieth century. German books were set in Fraktur while English, French and Italian books had long moved to roman type — which is why the style still reads as distinctly German.
Reading it takes practice
Several letters trip people up. Capital 𝔅 and 𝔙 look alike, as do 𝔉 and 𝔗. Lowercase 𝔰 has a tall form that readers often mistake for an f. Keep Fraktur to short pieces — a name, a heading, a title — where a reader can slow down.
Please use these sparingly
Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.
One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Fraktur" actually mean?
It means "broken" in Latin. The curves of the letters are broken into short angled strokes rather than drawn as smooth arcs. That is what separates Fraktur from the other blackletter styles, such as Textura and Schwabacher.
Why is Fraktur in Unicode at all?
For mathematics, not decoration. Fraktur capitals denote particular kinds of algebraic object, so a formula needed them to survive as plain text. Everything else these characters get used for is borrowed from that.
Is this a font I have to install?
No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.
Why do some styles show as empty boxes?
A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.
Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?
It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
