Script that survives a plain text box

Wedding invitations, product names and quote graphics all reach for handwriting, but the places people type — a caption, a bio, a username, a chat — offer no font choice at all. These characters carry the handwritten look inside the text itself, which is why they still look right after being pasted.

Keep it short

Script is slower to read than plain letters, and much slower at small sizes. Use it for a name, a tagline or a single line of a quote. A full paragraph in bold cursive is where most people give up and scroll past.

Please use these sparingly

Screen readers do not cope well with substituted characters. Depending on the app, a styled word is read out one letter at a time, read as a string of symbol names, or skipped entirely. Someone using a screen reader may simply never receive that part of your profile.

One styled phrase in a bio is a design choice. An entire profile in styled characters shuts people out, and search cannot read it either. Keep your name, your job and your link in plain letters.

Frequently asked questions

Which cursive style should I pick?

The bold script is the one most people mean by "cursive" — rounded, heavy and clearly handwritten. The lighter script is thinner and more formal, and it can disappear against a busy background on a phone screen.

Why do a few letters look like normal letters?

The lighter script block has gaps, so B, E, F, H, I, L, M, R and lowercase e, g and o are borrowed from an older part of Unicode. They were drawn to match, but on some devices they are a shade lighter than the rest.

Is this a font I have to install?

No. These are real Unicode characters that happen to look styled. The look is part of the character itself, so it travels with the text. Nobody needs to install anything to see it.

Why do some styles show as empty boxes?

A box means the device you are looking at has no font covering that character. Older Android phones hit this most often. Check your text on a phone before you put it in a bio, and prefer the styles near the top of the page — they are the widely supported ones.

Will fancy text hurt my search visibility?

It can. Search treats a styled letter as a different character from the plain one, so a name written in fancy text will not match when somebody searches the normal spelling. Keep your name and the important words plain, and decorate around them.
