How NYT Strands Works

In NYT Strands, you find words hidden within a 6x8 letter grid. Every letter on the board is used exactly once. Words can twist in any direction—horizontally, vertically, and diagonally.

What is a Spangram?

The Spangram is the master word that explains the puzzle's theme. It always touches two opposite sides of the grid (either from the left edge to the right edge, or from the top edge to the bottom edge). Finding the Spangram first is the best strategy because it cuts the board into smaller sections.

Finding non-theme words for hints

For every three non-theme words of four letters or more that you find, the game rewards you with an official hint that outlines the letters of an undiscovered theme word.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Spangram in Strands?

A Spangram is a special theme word that spans across the entire board, touching two opposite sides (left-to-right or top-to-bottom). It turns yellow when discovered.

Can letters in Strands be used more than once?

No. Every single letter on the 48-tile grid belongs to exactly one theme word or the Spangram. Once solved, no letters remain unused.

What time does NYT Strands reset?

A brand new Strands puzzle launches every day at midnight (12:00 AM) local time.
