How the NYT Spelling Bee works

The New York Times Spelling Bee is a daily word puzzle created by Frank Longo and edited by Sam Ezersky. Players are presented with a honeycomb hive of seven letters: one center letter in gold, and six surrounding outer letters. The goal is to construct as many valid English words as possible using only these seven letters.

Key Spelling Bee Rules

  • Length Requirement: All words must be at least 4 letters long.
  • Center Letter Mandatory: Every valid word must include the center letter at least once.
  • Repeated Letters Allowed: You may use any letter as many times as you like.
  • Excluded Words: Proper nouns, hyphenated words, profanities, and obscure technical jargon are not accepted.

Scoring & Pangrams

In Spelling Bee, 4-letter words earn 1 point each. Words with 5 or more letters earn 1 point per letter (e.g. a 6-letter word scores 6 points). A Pangram is a word that uses every one of the 7 letters at least once; each pangram awards an extra 7 bonus points!
