Remove Whitespace

Double spaces after full stops, tabs from a spreadsheet, trailing spaces you cannot see. Each one is a separate switch, so you remove what is actually in the way and leave the rest alone.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Paste the text.
  2. 2Turn on the parts you want removed — repeated spaces, trailing spaces, blank lines.
  3. 3Use “Remove every space” only if you really mean every one.
  4. 4Copy the cleaned text.

The spaces you cannot see

Trailing spaces at the end of a line cause more trouble than any other kind. They break exact-match comparisons in spreadsheets, they create empty items when a list is split, and they are invisible in every editor that does not deliberately show them. Trimming line ends is the single most useful thing on this page.

Before you paste into something else

  • Into a spreadsheet — trim line ends, or your lookups will silently miss.
  • Into code — remove tabs, then let the formatter put its own back.
  • Into a CMS — remove blank lines, which often become empty paragraphs.
  • Into a form with a length limit — collapse repeated spaces first; they count.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there more than one switch?

Because “extra whitespace” means different things to different people. One person has double spaces after full stops, another has a tab-indented paste from a spreadsheet, a third has invisible trailing spaces breaking a comparison. Removing all of it every time would break as often as it helps.

What counts as whitespace?

Spaces, tabs and line breaks. Non-breaking spaces — the ones Word and web pages insert — look identical and are a different character; those are collapsed here too, which is why a paste that “still has double spaces” usually stops after this.

Should I use one space or two after a full stop?

One. Two was a typewriter convention, kept alive by typing classes long after the machines that needed it disappeared. Every current style guide specifies one, and proportional fonts already put the right gap there.
