The shape of a speech that works

Open with something concrete — a moment, not a thesis. Make two or three points, each attached to one story. Close by returning to the opening image. That structure is old because it works, and it is what this builds.

Practise out loud, not in your head

Reading silently takes about half the time speaking does, which is how people end up two minutes over. Say it out loud, standing, with a timer, at least twice.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a five-minute speech?

About 650. Most people speak at 120 to 150 words a minute on their feet, which is slower than ordinary talking because you pause more. Plan for 130 a minute and you will be close.

Can I read this out as it is?

Please do not. A generated speech has the shape right and the specifics missing, and the specifics are the only part anybody remembers. Use it as a skeleton and hang your own stories on it.
