Using a generated line as a prompt

The useful thing a random line does is hand you an image you would never have picked. Your own writing has habits — favourite words, familiar rhythms, the same few images — and a generated line ignores every one of them. That small discomfort is where new material comes from.

Three ways in

Take a line and make it the last line, then write the poem that earns it. Or write a poem that argues with it. Or keep only the strangest word in it and write four lines that deserve that word.

Frequently asked questions

Can a generator write a real poem?

No, and it is not trying to. What it can do is put words next to each other that you would not have chosen, which breaks the habits your own writing has. The value is the one line that makes you think "no, but almost".

Can I publish something that started here?

Yes. The lines are assembled from our own word lists, with nothing copied from a published poem, and there are no conditions on what you do with the result. In practice you will have rewritten most of it before it is finished anyway.
