Where song titles come from

Three places: the hook, which is safest; a striking line from a verse, which reads as more literary; or a phrase that never appears in the song, which sets an expectation the lyric then has to answer. All three work. The last is hardest.

Before you commit

Search it on a streaming service. Say it out loud — it will be said far more often than it is read. And look at it on artwork, where a long title shrinks to nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Should the title be a line from the song?

Usually, and normally from the hook. Listeners search for the words they remember, which are almost always in the chorus. A title that appears nowhere in the lyric is harder to find and harder to hold on to.

Can two songs share a title?

Legally yes. Practically, if the other one is well known, yours sits under it in every streaming search for the rest of its life. Check before you release, not after.
