Acronym Generator
Two directions: a phrase into an acronym, or a word into a phrase that spells it. Press Generate as often as you like — nothing is saved and nothing is sent anywhere.
How to use this tool
- 1Paste a phrase to shorten, or type a word to expand.
- 2Choose whether small words like "of" and "the" are allowed in.
- 3Press Generate.
- 4Copy the version that is still sayable.
Type a phrase above and the acronym appears here.
What makes one stick
It has to be sayable, spellable after hearing it once, and not already taken in your field. Failing the third is the expensive one — two organisations with one acronym confuse search results and paperwork for years.
Backronyms
Expanding an existing word into a phrase works when the word already means something relevant. When it does not, the join shows, and everybody can tell the word came first.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
An acronym is said as a word — NASA, laser, scuba. An initialism is said letter by letter — BBC, HTML, FBI. Both are built the same way; which one you have depends entirely on whether the letters happen to be pronounceable.
Should I invent an acronym for my project?
Only if it is shorter to say than the thing it replaces and people will use it unprompted. An acronym nobody adopts is a second name you now have to explain every time, which is worse than having one name.
